Heatwave

Periods of extreme heat can pose both health and property risks. If you live in an area prone to heatwaves, landscaping and renovation measures should be taken to withstand extreme heat, regulate temperature, and maximize energy efficiency. Preventative measures should be taken to prevent dehydration and overheating.

Heatwave Stockpiles Should Include:

The Basics

Refer to the Basic Stockpile List,.

Take special note of the following items: Water, fire extinguisher, sunscreen

Clothing

Lightweight, light-colored clothing with a wide-brimmed hat is best for keeping cool in extreme heat.

Keep Your Home Cool

The best way to keep your home cool during a heatwave will be an air conditioner. Make sure your ACs are properly BTU-rated for the size of your room,. When possible, equip your AC with high efficiency filters. Maintain proper insulation, and install weather strips for doors and windows to maximize AC efficiency.

Drapes and shades for windows, window reflectors and thermal pane windows will reduce the amount of heat entering your home from the outside and keep your home cool.

Since heat rises, attic fans and vents can extract heat from the warmest location of your house.

Low temperature indoor plants such as aloe vera, snake plant, and Boston fern can help lower the internal temperature of your home.

Leafblower

Flammable debris (including pine needles, dry grass, and other combustible materials) should be kept 30-100 feet away from your home, depending on the topography of your surroundings.

Sports Drinks

Drinks with electrolytes such as Gatorade or Pedialyte can stave off heat cramps and combat the effects of dehydration.

Solar Panels

If you live in an area that's prone to prolonged periods of sunshine, solar panels can reduce your energy bill and serve as a cost-efficient investment in an alternative source of energy.
