Drought

A drought will require water conservation, and—in extreme cases—may result in water loss. Steps should be taken to maximize the efficiency of your water usage, both in and around your home.

Drought Stockpiles Should Include:

The Basics

Refer to the Basic Stockpile List.

Take special note of the following items: Water, fire extinguisher

Water Conserving Appliances

Flow restricted faucet aerators will help reduce excessive water use when applied to sinks.

An instant hot water heater attached to the sink can cut down on the amount of water that's needed to flow before it becomes hot.

A toilet displacement device takes up room in the tank, cutting down on the amount of water needed to fill it up.

Install a low-flow showerhead to reduce your water usage when showering, and keep a bucket near your shower to catch excess water for use elsewhere.

A water saving pool filter can conserve water during a drought, while pool and hot tub covers can prevent water evaporation.

Compost Pile

Using a compost pile in lieu of your garbage disposal is an environmentally friendly way to reduce water use.

Water Efficient Landscaping

Drought resistant lawn seed—including Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine—require less water and rainfall.

Water Efficient Irrigation Systems: Rain or soil moisture sensors can prevent overwatering, while properly calibrated irrigation methods can save water during a drought. For more information on water efficient irrigation, visit WaterUseItWisely.com.

Use mulch around your trees and plants to conserve soil moisture.

Install a shut off nozzle on your hose to reduce water flow down to a fine mist.

Lawns do not need to be watered when soil is moist. A soil probe can detect moisture levels and let you know if it's time to water again.

Use a leafblower to clear leaves and debris in lieu of a hose.

Rain Catchment System

A rain catchment system installed on the roof will catch rain water and store it in large tanks for use later.
