Extreme Winter Weather
During extreme winter conditions and blizzards, entrances and exits may become obstructed, roads can be hazardous, and you may experience utility loss, including heat. To prepare for extreme winter weather, make sure your home is well-insulated, stockpile household items, and prepare to stay warm without the use of electricity or gas. Be prepared to evacuate.

Extreme Winter Weather Stockpiles Should Include:
The Basics
Refer to the Basic Stockpile List, including all items for Evacuating and Sheltering In Place.
Take special note of the following items: NOAA radio, whistle, winter clothing, vehicle supplies, hand warmers, extra blankets, carbon monoxide detector, portable space heater, generators
Snow Tools
Keep a snow shovel and pickaxe for freeing up entrances, exits and paths.
A snow saw can be used to free up entraces and exits and create snow barriers and snow shelters.
Locators
RECCO reflectors are small objects that often come built into snowgear that reflect signals back to RECCO detectors. The RECCO system can help locate individuals who become lost in a blizzard.
Home Insulation
Make sure your home is properly insulated and weather strips have been installed around doors and windows. Since heat rises, make sure your attic is properly insulated to prevent heat from escaping.
Window film can provide another barrier against cold, while dual pane thermal windows can help maintain your home’s internal temperature.
Install energy efficient curtains, blinds and shades.
As snow melts, metal angle flashing can prevent water from leaking into key areas of your home.
